Team Profile
Maya Burney is a Senior Officer on the Investments team and has been with Calvert Impact since August 2024. Maya’s responsibilities include a mix of deal sourcing and underwriting, and portfolio management, strategic execution and ecosystem partnership building within Calvert’s flagship Community Investment Note portfolio.
Before joining Calvert Impact:
Maya worked at Caleo Capital, a globally diversified investment and financial services group based in Johannesburg, as an Associate Partner and Dealmaker within the private equity team. She has structured, raised, and deployed capital using debt, equity, and hybrid instruments in emerging and developed markets, and has partnered with HNWIs and family offices to align their portfolios with their personal ethos. In 2021, Maya founded a network and alternative investment vehicle called Womvest serving women-led micro-and-medium-sized businesses in South Africa. Maya is an American-Canadian citizen that has lived and worked in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Canada, and the USA.
Maya holds an M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management from Georgetown McDonough School of Business and a BCom Honors in Finance from the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business. She also completed the Oxford Saïd Business School Impact Finance Innovations Program and is an alumna of the Africa-Asia Impact Investing Fellowship run by the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) and Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) in collaboration with the Oxford Saïd Business School.
